Jeong Woo-Young
Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine language learning strategies that cadets use at the Armed Forces Nursing Academy and its effect on their English achievement. The key purposes of the study can be summarized as follows; 1)investigate language learning strategy usage of cadets at the AFNA; 2)analyze the effect of language learning strategy scores(Memory, Cognitive, Compensation, Metacognitive, social, affective strategy) on English achievement.

Method: The subjects of this study were 138 freshmen and sophomores, 70, 68 cadets respectively. The survey was conducted using Oxford¡¯s SILL(Strategy Inventory of Language Learning) and TEPS scores for achievement. The data
were analysed through t-test and ANOVA test.

Results: Results revealed that cadets were using the language learning strategy in the following order: 1)compensation strategy, 2)cognitive strategy, 3)memory strategy, 4)metacognitive strategy, 5)social strategy, 6)affective strategy. All language learning strategies except memory and social strategy had statistically significant impact on English
achievement. The results suggest that cadets with higher LLS scores did perform significantly better than cadets with lower LLS scores on listening, vocabulary, reading, and total scores.

Conclusion: Thus, certain language learning strategies could be more effective on cadets¡¯ English achievement,
and we should facilitate the use of language learning strategies for more effective language learning.
